Blog: How to Stay Grounded When the World Feels Overwhelming
Finding Calm in the Age of Information
We live in a time where information is always at our fingertips. While this has its benefits, it also comes with challenges. Our minds are constantly flooded with updates, images, and stories—some welcome, some not. Even with the best intentions to curate what we see, social media and nonstop information can feel overwhelming. If you’re already prone to anxiety, this constant stream can feel draining on your body, mind, and spirit. That’s why carving out space for quiet and reflection is essential for both mood and nervous system regulation.
So, how do we quiet the noise?
Set social media limits. If you catch yourself slipping into doomscrolling during downtime, create a list of go-to alternatives: read a book, color, meditate, take a walk, call a loved one, or spend some time in nature.
Journal with gratitude. Writing down what you’re thankful for—both the big things and the tiny moments—helps shift your focus and creates space for joy. Gratitude journaling is a powerful way to soften anxious thoughts. Sometimes the micro-moments of joy can be the most powerful, such as cuddling with a pet or drinking your favorite tea in the morning. The more we notice and appreciate these simple pleasures, the more they tend to grow in our lives.
Practice grounding. Anxiety often pulls us out of the present moment and leaves us feeling disconnected. Try standing barefoot or sitting on a chair with your feet planted on the floor, and imagine roots growing from your feet deep into the earth. Breathe slowly and deeply until your mind feels more at ease. You can also try some diaphragmatic breathwork with 6 counts breathing in, holding for 4, and breathing out for 6.
We can’t always control what’s happening around us, but we can choose how we respond. The next time you feel overwhelmed, try one of these practices and notice how your energy shifts.
