Is Your Nervous System Regulated?

Have you ever wondered whether your nervous system is truly regulated — or if your body is living in a constant state of stress? Here are some signs of a dysregulated nervous system.

Four common stress responses that indicate nervous system dysregulation are: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.

  • Fight may show up as irritability, frustration, defensiveness, or feeling easily triggered.

  • Flight often manifests as anxiety, restlessness, overthinking, excessive busyness, or difficulty in slowing down.

  • Freeze can feel like emotional shutdown, numbness, low motivation, brain fog, or feeling stuck.

  • Fawn tends to appear as people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, prioritizing others over yourself, or fear of conflict.

If any of these resonate with you, your body may be stuck in a cycle where it no longer feels safe. When this happens, the nervous system remains in survival mode, making it harder to heal, rest, and truly thrive.

How Do You Bring Your Body Back Into Balance?

When my clients are struggling with their mental or physical health, the very first place we begin is nervous system regulation. Supporting the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s “rest and digest” state — allows the body to move out of fight-or-flight mode and return to a state of balance, or homeostasis.

Many powerful techniques help regulate the nervous system, but some of my favorites include meditation, breathwork, and gentle affirmations. These practices signal safety to the body. Over time, the nervous system begins to trust again, allowing regulation to happen more naturally and with greater ease.
